01What it sells and who buys it
Cursor is an AI editor for understanding, modifying and running code across a project. It sells to individual developers and expands into team and enterprise tool budgets.
02How the business makes money
It monetizes individual subscriptions, organizational seats and AI usage. Trial usage can develop into a recurring personal workflow and then a broader team deployment.
03Marketing and customer acquisition
Cursor demonstrated value inside the daily editor and supported peer-to-peer adoption.
- 01
Change the editing workflow
SourceTab expanded from text completion into surrounding edits and next-location suggestions. The company reported roughly 100-fold request growth between its March 2024 model introduction and January 2025.
- 02
Teach through deep demos and community events
SourceTechnical demonstrations and founder interviews show how the editor works. Ambassadors run local workshops and hackathons that help newcomers begin using it, alongside university programs. The distribution mechanism gives practicing developers ways to demonstrate the product to peers.
- 03
Financing the next stage
SourceAfter venture financing supported its editor and models, Cursor announced that it was joining SpaceX in August 2026. Company and filing records give a transaction value of $60 billion, distinct from earlier funding valuations.
How the growth mechanism works
- Try it in the editor
- Delegate the next edit
- Teach a colleague
- Adopt across a team
Daily adoption requires improving work developers already do. Tab and file edits demonstrate value within that context. Detailed demos and workshops teach the workflow, connecting use to subscriptions and enterprise contracts while compute costs scale too.

More about the founding and key events
Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark and Aman Sanger founded the company in 2022. They were 25–26 in March 2026. Cursor offered an environment that read and edited files. Its Tab feature could modify surrounding code and suggest the next editing location. The company began using its own models in March 2024 and said requests for the feature had grown about a hundredfold by January 2025.
The founders used detailed demonstrations and developer education to show the product. Their 2024 Lex Fridman interview devoted considerable time to features and real usage. An ambassador program later supported meetups, workshops and hackathons with event funding and usage credits. Users gained places to learn the product and teach others.
Developers could experience its value every time they wrote code, with little need to move work elsewhere. That connected repeated individual use with team adoption.
In November 2025, Cursor announced $1 billion in annualized revenue and a $29.3 billion valuation. It announced completion of its SpaceX acquisition in August 2026, with an equity value of $60 billion in the SEC filing. Forbes’ $1.3 billion estimate for each founder in March 2026 preceded that transaction.
